Counterpoint Concert presents its first S Street Salon performance of Schubert’s Winterreise, featuring baritone Rob McGinness and pianist & founder, Natalia Kazaryan. Written at age 30, a mere two years before his death, Schubert’s iconic work is one of deep emotional exploration and lamentation. Set against a bleak, wintry landscape, the song cycle depicts a lovelorn wanderer who, in the words of Schubert authority Richard Capell, “directly face[s], all unprepared, the blasts of the different and surprising hours of life."
This intimate event, hosted in a Dupont Circle home and funded by the Beverly Losch Endowment for Counterpoint Concerts, will include a reception with hors d’oeuvres and wine.

Counterpoint collaborative partners, clarinetist Zachary Good of the renowned Eighth Blackbird and internationally-recognized violinist Katie Hyunn, join pianist & founder Natalia Kazaryan for a colorful and vibrant concert of music for violin, clarinet, and piano. The program includes several hidden gems, including trios by Aram Khachaturian and the unsung Russian composer, Galina Ustolvkata, as well as familiar favorites in Bartók’s Contrasts and Bernstein’s clarinet sonata, programmed alongside wonderfully evocative contemporary works by the American composers Carlos Simon and Alvin Singleton.

Bach's timeless genius combined with the innovative energy of the 21st century. The program is brought to life by the exceptional musicians of the National Symphony Orchestra (NSO), the highly sought-after soloist & collaborator, cellist Gabriel Cabezas, and Counterpoint’s founder & pianist, Natalia Kazaryan, in partnership with Grace Street Creative. An innovative fusion of J.S. Bach’s timeless genius with 21st-century multimedia creativity.
Counterpoint Concerts is thrilled to launch its inaugural season with a truly unique performance of Bach to the Future on the Millennium Stage at the Kennedy Center. This bold reimagining of Bach’s masterpieces features musicians from the National Symphony Orchestra and Counterpoint’s founder & pianist, Natalia Kazaryan, in collaboration with Grace Street Creative.
Bach to the Future reimagines Bach’s beloved masterpieces for both traditional and unconventional instrumentations, showcasing the everlasting magic of classical music through time. The program will feature Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 for a flute and string quintet with harpsichord, Chaconne in D minor transcribed for piano by Ferruccio Busoni, Air on the G String for string quartet, and works performed on electronic keyboard instruments, in a nod to Wendy Carlos’ groundbreaking recording “Switched On Bach.”

American violinist Stella Chen gained global recognition after winning the top prize in the 2019 Queen Elisabeth International Violin Competition. This accomplishment was followed by the 2020 Avery Fisher Career Grant and the 2020 Lincoln Center Emerging Artist Award. She recently made debuts with the New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, Minnesota Orchestra, Israel Philharmonic, Chamber Orchestra of Europe, and many others and appeared at the Vienna Musikverein and Berlin Philharmonie. Joining Stella is pianist Natalia Kazaryan, co-founder of the Washington Arts Ensemble.

Felix Mendelssohn's older sister of three years, Fanny Mendelssohn, was a prolific composer, and the source of much of her brother's inspiration. Both siblings wrote piano trios and songs, as well as especially lyrical pieces for piano solo entitled “Songs without Words.” Enjoy the lesser known Fanny Mendelssohn's meticulously crafted works and unique brand of melody and expressiveness alongside those of Felix. Cofounders Natalia Kazaryan and Christopher Schmitt will be joined by Associate Concertmaster of the National Symphony, violinist Ying Fu, and series regular, cellist Joseph Gotoff.

The pioneering voices of African-American women and the men who supported them, the collaboration between the sexes in poetry and song, and the progressive integration of thematic content and musical texture provide the essence of this artistic tribute to such a relevant piece of American history. Acclaimed mezzo-soprano Chrystal E. Williams returns from the Metropolitan Opera to offer a program of Art Songs with pianist and cofounder Natalia Kazaryan. H.T. Burleigh's “Five Songs of Laurence Hope” will be performed alongside Ottorino Resphigi's “Quattro Canzone,” based on a text by Ada Negri. Spirituals by Margaret Bonds and Undine Smith Moore, “The Dean of Black Women Composers,” will be featured beside the world premiere of “They Walk Alone,” a collaboration between Ms. Williams’ and her husband: composer, Felipe Hostin.
Washington Arts Ensemble: The Meaning behind the Music
In keeping with holiday celebrations around the globe, our December concert will explore how various composers found meaning in music, whether it be through tradition, worship, or simply gratitude and purpose. Pianist and cofounder Natalia Kazaryan will perform the Second Keyboard Partita by the great J.S. Bach, and several selections from the Vingt regards sur l’enfant-Jésus of Olivier Messiaen, who was a prisoner of war during WWII in France. The concert will close with Felix Mendelssohn's second piano trio, an homage to the role of the spiritual in his life. Pianist and cofounder Christopher Schmitt will be joined by series regular cellist Joseph Gotoff, and the young prodigious talent of Bulgarian/Japanese descent, violinist Julia Angelov.
Reception begins at 6:30, followed by the concert at 7:15.
